Thank you for helping me reach my Walk ALS fundraising goal! The Walk ALS raises funds to support those affected by ALS and to spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone, and presently there is no known cause or cure.
That’s why I’m helping to raise money to change the statistics. To bring help and hope to those living with the disease. To ensure that no one ever hears the words: “You Have ALS” again.
My Dad, Bill Hawken, was diagnosed in June 1998 with ALS and passed September 2000.
Once diagnosed the disease progressed so quickly with his limitations changing weekly. He immediately wanted to move from Sweet Home Oregon to Coronado Ca as that’s where he’d hoped to retire. We spent as much time with my Dad as possible over those next 27 months. It was hard thing to watch and go through at the young age of 32 years old. Now that I am my Dads age when he got sick with ALS I cannot even imagine the sadness he felt to has his life cut so short.
My high school friend is currently struggling with ALS for the past years. I pray for her often but haven’t seen Vicki in years. I am honored to be on Vicki’s team and raise money to help STOP ALS!!
