2023 Walk to Defeat ALS® Portland

Team Opton

Michael P. Opton passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully in the early morning hours of July 21st with his beloved wife of 44 years, Jan by his side. He was diagnosed with ALS on April 5, 2022, and like all obstacles in his life, Michael battled his horrific disease with positivity and hope.

He had a true zest and love of life. His list of his hobbies and passions are long and diverse - barrel race, hang-gliding, ocean kayaking, woodworking, golfing and camping, to name a few.

One of his greatest passions and points of pride was spending time with his family. He adored his four grandchildren and loved spending time with them. Whether that meant backpacking in his seventies to take them on a “Great Adventure,” swimming, conversations about the nature of the universe, or showing them how to woodwork in his shop, he cherished the time spent with them and had a very close and special bond with each one of them. He adored them, and they adored their Papa.

Michael will be deeply missed by so many. Please consider donating to the ALS Association of Oregon and SW Washington, which provides services for people living with ALS and research for a cure. This organization has been a lifeline for Michael and his family during this incredibly difficult time.
