2023 Walk to Defeat ALS® Portland

Pam's People

Thank you for helping us reach our fundraising goal! Together we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by ALS. Our team is committed to raising money to support people in our community with ALS and spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure. Please consider joining our team in the Walk to Defeat ALS® or choose a team member from the list and donate to our cause.

After a nearly year-long battle with the medicial community to come to a diagnosis for continued weakness in her right arm, Pam was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) last month. It has been a long, frustrating, and exhausting battle for Pam and our family to finally get some kind of clarity for the issues she has dealt with. While this has been a devastating diagnosis, we are turning our attention toward providing as much love, support, and help we can toward her as we continue to move forward and learn to live with disease.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone, and presently there is no known cause or cure.

As our family has learned more about this disease over the last few months, we have heard quite a few times that ALS is not an incurable disease, but an underfunded one. There is still many years of studies, research, etc. to be done, but one day there will be a cure for this disease.
The past two years have brought incredible advancements in ALS research, expanded access to care for people living with ALS, and enabled legislation that impacts the quality of life of people with ALS and their families.

Our hope isn't to generate the funds in a single walk or fundraiser to cure this disease but we understand that any little bit can have a major impact. Our main goal for this walk is to show Pam what an incredible group of people she has behind her and supporting her. The ALS Association (specifically the Portland-Metro Chapter) have been an incredible help and truly deserve the financial support for all the wonderful things they do not just for Pam but everyone currently dealing with ALS.

Please do not feel any pressure to donate, but if you can we would love your support in the walk on June 4th, or even electronically via email or text. My mother is one of the strongest people I know but in the face of this disease even the strongest of us still need to know they are loved and supported.

Thank you for taking the time to read and even think about donating or participating. We appreciate all of you.
Sincerely,
The Iosco's
