2023 Walk to Defeat ALS® SW Washington

"No ALS in space" in memory of Laurie Karma

We walk for Laurie Karma, a beloved girlfriend to all of us, but especially to the special man in her life, Tony Klein.  She was the bravest soul we’ve ever met!  She faced ALS with grace, strength, and dignity.

Laurie was born April 1, 1664 and passed away July 29, 2021 from the devastating effects of ALS at the age of 57.

During her brave battle, she was determined to be as independent as possible for as long as possible.  When her body would no longer allow her to manage a task – she’d come up with another way to do it.

Laurie didn’t just think of herself and her battle, she thought of the others that would come after her.  That is why she chose to be a participant in several ALS research studies at the Providence Brain and Spine Institute.  How wonderful it is to know that she contributed toward the knowledge and treatments for ALS, and, hopefully, someday soon - a cure. That's a great legacy, Laurie!!!!

We’ll be walking on May 21, remembering and honoring Laurie and her love of her family, friends, Halloween, dancing, Portland Winter Hawk games, shopping, and her beauty inside and out!

Thank you for helping us reach our fundraising goal! Together we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by ALS.

ABOUT ALS

Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.

It is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis.

ALS can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease, yet it still costs loved ones an average of $250,000 a year to provide the care people living with ALS and their families need. Join the movement to provide help and hope today!
