2024 Walk ALS SW Washington

"No ALS in space" in memory of Laurie Karma

We are walking for our dear friend, Laurie Karma, Laurie was born April 1, 1664 and passed away July 29, 2021 from the devastating effects of ALS.

She faced ALS with grace, strength, and dignity.  She was always thinking, planning, organizing and figuring out new ways to do day-to-day tasks - and coaching us on how best to help her.

And Laurie didn’t just think of herself and her battle, she thought of the others that would come after her.  That is why she chose to be a participant in several ALS research studies at the Providence Brain and Spine Institute.  She decided early on in her battle that she wanted to donate her body to science.  It’s wonderful to know that she contributed toward the knowledge and treatments for ALS, and, hopefully, someday soon - a cure. That's a great legacy, Laurie!!!!

We’ll be walking on May remembering and honoring her and her love of her family, friends, Halloween, dancing, Portland Winter Hawk games, shopping, her laugh (oh we miss her laugh) and her beauty inside and out!

Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.
That’s why we’re participating in the Walk ALS. To bring hope. To raise awareness. To provide resources and services to families free of charge. To help uncover the mystery of ALS and find treatments and cures to end ALS. Will you join us?
ALS can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease, yet it still costs loved ones an average of $250,000 a year to provide the care people living with ALS and their families need. Join the movement to provide help and hope today!
